The Business Dispute Readiness (BDR) Framework

The Business Dispute Readiness (BDR) Framework is a structured approach to analyzing and responding to workplace conflict. Rather than encouraging immediate confrontation or escalation, BDR emphasizes disciplined strategic discernment—evaluating incentives, risks, power relationships, and timing before deciding how to act.

The framework integrates several well-established conflict resolution strategies drawn from negotiation theory, organizational behavior, and conflict analysis. Each strategy offers a different way to reduce tension, clarify interests, and improve the chances of reaching a workable outcome.

No single strategy guarantees success. But when applied thoughtfully, these approaches can help individuals navigate difficult workplace situations with greater clarity, restraint, and credibility.

Not every workplace conflict has a perfect solution.
But many improve when approached with disciplined strategic discernment.

Six Core Strategies

The BDR Framework draws upon six complementary conflict resolution strategies:

Phased Intercession
A structured approach to slowing escalation and testing cooperation through incremental engagement.

Controlled Communication
Managing tone, timing, and framing to prevent unnecessary escalation and maintain credibility.

Superordinate Goals
Identifying shared objectives that encourage cooperation despite competing interests.

Unilateral Initiatives (GRIT)
Taking carefully chosen cooperative actions designed to encourage reciprocity and reduce tension.

SPIN (Situation / Problem / Implication / Need-Payoff)
Using structured questioning to clarify interests, uncover constraints, and guide constructive dialogue.

Principled Negotiation
Separating people from problems and focusing on objective criteria to reach mutually acceptable solutions.
