Much of the advice offered about workplace conflict encourages immediate action—speak up, escalate the issue, document everything, or involve higher authority. In practice, those responses can sometimes make a difficult situation worse rather than better.
Workplace conflicts rarely unfold in balanced environments. Authority, incentives, reputation, and organizational pressure all shape how people behave. Responding effectively requires more than reacting to the immediate problem. It requires understanding the structure of the conflict itself.
